Americans’ Comfort with Chinese Brands Sharply Increases

Chicago, Illinois (August 21, 2011) – The Monogram Group Inc., a Chicago-based market research, branding and advertising agency, today announced surprising results of their third nationwide survey of U.S. consumers’ attitudes towards China and Chinese brands. The study shows perceptions of Chinese goods being high quality increased by 50%, while perceptions of low quality decreased by 30%, giving China Inc. its best quality ratings since the survey began.
Previously conducted in 2007 and 2008, the new study captured inputs from over 5,000 U.S. respondents during the week of May 23-27, 2011, using Thumbspeak’s innovative mobile market research platform.
In addition, China also had its strongest showing in the overall price/value ratio, with an increase of 18% in the perception of Chinese goods being low priced.
“Clearly, the lack of high-profile, damaging news in the last few years regarding Chinese product quality deficiencies has led to these improved perceptions,” said Jackie Short, Monogram’s Director of Market Research. “But also, Americans understand that many of the products at mainstream retailers are made in China and provide perfectly acceptable quality…especially for the price.”
Even more encouraging news is that a broad range of products, from computers to toys to soaps to sporting goods, all showed sharply higher numbers in Americans’ openness to purchase Chinese goods in these categories.
“This is a leading indicator for consideration and eventual trust in Chinese brands across many categories,” said Scott Markman, Monogram’s President. “While Lenovo and Haier have been the forerunners, now is an excellent time for many Chinese manufacturers to consider going up the value chain in the US market under their own label.”

Online vs Mobile Research

Mobile Versus Online Research

Resolve Market Research, Cint and Thumbspeak partner to compare survey results using both online and smartphones.

Scottsdale, ARIZONA, July 19, 2011Brands and researchers can leverage the mobile phone in tandem with online surveys – and expect equivalent results

In a study performed by Resolve Market Research, and powered by Cint with Thumbspeak, the parallel results suggest that marketers can now reach consumers in a contextually relevant, real-time setting.  The findings indicate that mobile surveys can complement online surveys or run independently to provide very timely and reliable insights.  Opting to wait days after a consumer purchases a product or has a specific branded experience might be over.

The study was designed to examine whether consumers would respond differently to questions about their own tablet device usage while they were surveyed online versus on their smartphone.  Eight hundred sixty-six (n=866) US tablet device and iPhone owners participated in the study.  Each respondent was given the same set of 16 questions.  The mobile survey group (n=500) used Thumbspeak on their iPhones, Cint Group’s leading mobile relationship marketing platform, for survey-taking on smartphones, while the online survey group (n=366) were acquired online through the Cint Panel Exchange, the open, transparent sample marketplace consisting of over 5 million panelists across 550 panels.

Elaine B. Coleman, Ph.D, Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer at Resolve Market Research states, “What’s surprising is that regardless of taking the survey on a smartphone or online; respondents’ data look very similar.  Yet, what differed significantly were the higher response rates and completion rates in favor of iPhones (43% Mobile versus 24% Online).  Although more research is needed to understand the “novelty effect” of the mobile platform, taken together, the advantages of surveying consumers on mobile might outweigh the disadvantages of online.  Most importantly, you can now access consumers’ decision-making and preferences in natural, relevant and real-time contexts.”

The results of this study have clear implications for technology-driven mobile applications as viable platforms for delivering data quality to brands.  Asking questions on smartphones did not significantly alter the data in comparison to a computer setting.

The study found that 63% of tablet owners from the online platform used their tablets at their work desk—not a significant number higher than the tablet owners from the mobile platform (59%).

In fact, the online and mobile groups did not appear to engage with advertisements differently either. When asked if they pay attention to advertisements while using their tablet device, 32% from the online group said “Yes” with 33% from the mobile group agreeing as well. Brands and advertisers can expect similar levels of ad recall across both modes of surveying.

Most notably for content owners, the tablet has emerged as a true companion device for television and movie viewing. With the exception of the smartphone itself, tablet owners across both platforms were accessing content across multiple devices with similar usage rates.

Cint & Thumbspeak Announce Mobile Contextually Relevant Research “MCRR”

Changing the Way Businesses Get Answers - The Right Audience. Right Now.

Scottsdale, ARIZONA, July 19, 2011 – Thumbspeak LLC, a subsidiary of Cint AB, announced the launch of Mobile Contextually Relevant Research “MCRR” today on the one-year anniversary of its iPhone application at iTunes. Thumbspeak is the leading mobile relationship marketing solution now partnered with Cint, global technology solution provider for enabling market research.

“One year ago we made history by making it easy to ask questions of people on their smartphone. Now one year later, we continue to lead the mobile marketing research industry. Our acquisition by Cint earlier this year has allowed us to distribute our application worldwide and provide instant access to people on their smartphones, anywhere. MCRR makes mobile marketing research valuable to every business manager because we can deliver actual photographic contextually relevant data,” said Thumbspeak’s Founder, President Dean Wiltse.

Mobile Contextually Relevant Research (MCRR) allows insight managers and marketing researchers to gather in-the-moment data from people on their smartphones. They can now send questions via the Do-It-Yourself online interface directly to specific types of people in the Thumbspeak audience and ask them to photograph what they are doing in real time.

“Researchers have been struggling to understand how to best use the smartphone for data collection. Our MCRR solution from Thumbspeak is a new methodology that adds additional capabilities for the marketing research industry. Using Thumbspeak for MCRR together with our online capabilities is truly a powerful and revolutionary solution,” stated Bo Mattsson, CEO of Cint AB.

"We are very excited about the addition of the MCRR functionality to the Thumbspeak platform.  Being able to see the customer experience through their eyes while in the moment is a very powerful tool that we look forward to leveraging," said Scott Luck, Vice President of Innovations at Lieberman Research Worldwide (LRW).

The smartphone is the most powerful tool for gathering data for business insights and marketing research. Once someone has downloaded the Thumbspeak Mobile Application, businesses can begin to ask questions and offer rewards directly from the company website; http://www.thumbspeak.com.

Mobile Apps Revolutionize E-Commerce

Mobile Apps Revolutionize E-Commerce

LOS ANGELES, California, MAY 24, 2011 – Nearly three-quarters of smartphone users purchased products/services through mobile apps in the past year, making an average of 2 transactions every 3 months.

In a poll conducted by research giant Lieberman Research Worldwide and mobile marketing platform, Thumbspeak, 74% of respondents bought products or services through mobile apps in the past year, with an average of 8.4 purchases per user. This usage is only expected to grow as 80% plan to make purchases through apps in the next year, with an average of 10.5 projected transactions per user (representing estimated per-user growth of 25%).

“The mobile app space is booming as smartphone adoption has soared,” said Scott Luck, Vice President of Innovations at Lieberman Research Worldwide. “Companies are scrambling to find ways to leverage this new marketing tool to enhance customer loyalty and identify some incremental revenue streams.  We are trying to help companies optimize their mobile app offerings. It requires a lot of feature testing, but the payout can be enormous if you get it right.”

According to the poll, Facebook is currently the favorite mobile app, with Amazon, eBay, Angry Birds and Groupon rounding out respondents’ top five. “It’s interesting that none of the major brick-and-mortar retailers, packaged goods or traditional entertainment companies have emerged among the favorites. ESPN is the lone representative of these to crack the top 10, though I suspect this will change in the next 2-3 years,” Luck commented.

The poll was conducted among 1200 smartphone owners via mobile surveys on May 22, 2011, as part of the initial wave of a Mobile App Usage Tracking study sponsored by Lieberman Research Worldwide and Thumbspeak.

New Engagement Program at Customer Engagement Technology World (CETW) San Francisco 2011 (April 27-28) to Benefit Feeding America

thumbspeak Presents: Your Feedback Feeds America

Trumbull, CT – April 07, 2011: thumbspeak and Customer Engagement Technology World (CETW) today announced the launch of Your Feedback Feeds America, a program designed for CETW attendees with a unique built-in donation system. Attendees at CETW who participate in the program will have the opportunity to answer surveys throughout the event, with a 10 cents donation allocated for every survey or question answered through the thumbspeak mobile application. 100 percent of the funds collected from the survey program will be donated directly to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity.

“We are excited to continue to provide opportunities for our attendees to truly experience the technologies they seek at CETW,” said Lawrence Dvorchik, General Manager of CETW.  “Your Feedback Feeds America is a unique way to showcase this ability, as attendees will be involved in the customer experience program, gaining firsthand insights into how their own programs can leverage the technology and succeed, while being able to help feed hungry Americans. A true win-win-win all around.”

Every dollar received by Feeding America goes towards helping provide seven meals to men, women and children facing hunger and starvation in the United States.  Feeding America food bank members provide low-income individuals and families with the fuel they need to survive and even thrive. Feeding America’s network members supply food to more than 37 million Americans each year, including 14 million children and 3 million seniors.

CETW attendees can participate by downloading the thumbspeak app by following the instructions and QR Codes available at www.cetworld.com/thumbspeak.asp. Each attendee will have the opportunity to take various surveys about their experience at CETW.  Attendees may also stop by the thumbspeak booth (#639) and submit questions to be sent to all thumbspeak users at the show.  Every time your question gets answered, thumbspeak and CETW will donate an additional 10 cents to Feeding America.

“We are thrilled with the opportunity to partner with CETW for a program of this caliber,” said Dean Wiltse, President of thumbspeak.  “This program sets into motion the exploration of entirely new platforms to engage audiences for charitable causes and, most importantly, helps us give back to a truly deserving group like Feeding America.”
